After serving five years on active duty with
the U.S. Marine Corps (with a year in Vietnam was an infantryman),
Roberts joined the Army National Guard where he served in an infantry
Scout Platoon. After rising to Staff Sergeant, he attended OCS,
graduating as a 2nd Lt. after 13 years in the Guard he transferred
to the Army Reserve in 1982
